USUK Chapter Four: Homesick

Kat’s words pierced Alfred like a bullet. He had to answer her… she was his best friend. She had been the only one who even bothered to talk to him when he moved to Oregon. If it weren’t for her… he didn’t want to think about it. He had to tell her the truth. But what was the truth…  was he really gay?

“i…” his throat clogged up. He couldn’t say anything… His head was spinning the world tilting on its axis with nothing stopping it from plummeting into the sun. He felt himself falling, slipping through the cracks of a dark eternity, with nothing bad the pain and paralyzing agony. Then he saw a small light. Who was it who was guiding him through this darkness… could it be…?

“Alfred!” Kat exclaimed as Alfred started to fall backwards. Alfreds eyes shot open but not in time. His head crashed against the cold concrete letting out  blood curtle-ing smack.

“Alfred are you alright!?” Kat was already by his side. But where was he…? Surely it wasn’t the cold concrete he had just fallen on. He was laying on something soft… something familiar…

“Kat…?” Alfred opened his eyes to see his bedroom. He was lying in his bed, Kat kneeling beside him.  

“Dude are you ok?” Kat leaned in closer to him. She had obviously been crying earlier.  “Dude what the hell happened?” Alfred slowly sat up his head pounding as he did so. “You passed out during lunch you’ve been out for about five hours…” Kat replied softly. “Where’s Arthur…” Alfred asked slowly regaining his strength. “He’s at his house with a minor concussion. He’ll be back at school tomorrow.” Alfred let out a sigh of relief. “It’s funny that you worry more about him than yourself.” Kat giggled. Alfreds face turned slightly red “Hey I care about my friends!” Alfred exclaimed. “Right because you totally called me when I was sick last week.” Kat laughed again. Alfred looked down his face still a light shade of pink.

“But you didn’t answer my question.” Kat said quietly her smile fading. Alfred remained silent. But at least his head wasn’t spinning as badly as last time. “Kat…” He whispered “Yeah?” She replied softly “Close the door please… I don’t want my parents hearing…” Alfred said keeping his voice low. “Sure..” Kat said suspiciously. She knew what was coming. She had had the conversation with a friend a few months earlier when she had come out of the closet.

Kat closed the door and walked back over to Alfred once again kneeling on his bedside.  Alfred took in a deep breath planning his words carefully. “I think… I am…” Alfred said quietly taking deep breathes trying to keep his head clear. “Alfred, I’m here for you.” Kat was secretly exited; finally she was going to have a sassy gay friend of her own! Though Arthur would probably make a better one… “But I think… I like...” Kat cut him off  “Arthur?” Alfred looked over at her embarrassed. Was it really that obvious…? “Alfred, don’t be surprised it’s written all over your faces that you like each other.” Kat said quietly. He yaoi senses never lie. “I just don’t want you to be a third wheel Kat…” Alfred’s words surprised Kat. She had no clue that Alfred actually cared that much. “Hey don’t worry about it. I have Mathew anyways!” she smiled brightly at Alfred, which made him feel loads better about it. “Thanks for being so cool about it” Alfred smiled back at her.

Alfred’s mom walked into the room “Feel loads better about what?” She spoke suspiciously. “Uh…” Alfred was racing for words “Oh Alfie here was having trouble on this one Final Fantasy battle, I had trouble on it too so that’s better for him having trouble” Kat saved Alfred’s butt once again. “Oh okay sweeties. Well I’m glad your feeling better Alfred, dinners in about ten minutes. Kat you’re invited too if you’d like” Alfred’s mom replied. “Thank you ms. Jones I think I will” Kat smiled. She was a very likable person. Alfred’s mom nodded and closed the door.

“Nice save Kat.” Laughed Alfred. “It’s my job” They chatted and laughed for a while about how dumb parent’s can be sometimes.  After a little more chat about American politics and other retarded things they headed down for dinner. Which was of course Hamburgers. They all at and chatted and after dinner Kat stayed to help clean up dishes.  After that Kat went home leaving Alfred alone in his room. It was about ten o’ clock, but Alfred really didn’t want to sleep. He sighed and listened to his parents still down in the kitchen talk.

“Kat is such a nice girl helping Alfred out like that.”

“ She seems rather fond of Alfred.”

“Yes but Alf tells me she’s a lesbian.”

“That’s very interesting.”

“Yes, but they’re such great friends.”

“My question is when will Alfred ever get a proper girlfriend.”

Alfred couldn’t stand to listen any further. How was he going to tell his parents… they had never before had issues with his parents being homophobic but maybe it would be different if it was him… Even if his parent’s disowned him he could surely move in with Kat… His thoughts trailed off as he drifted into a deep sleep.
